Social Media Committee of the AWM
I was recently appointed as one of the members of the Social Media Committee of the Association for Women in Mathematics, a three year position that will start in 2023.
2nd DecK of Notable Women in Math Playing Cards
After the success of the 1st deck of Notable Women in Mathematics Playing Cards, the AWM is preparing the 2nd deck (out of a total of 4 to come in the next few years!). Having volunteered as a biography writer and a reviewer for the 1st deck, this year I decided to collaborate as a data collector. Despite the amount of work searching and documenting information and sources, it has been a very rewarding experience to collect data from 26 of the honorees that will be featured in the second deck!
I am also the coordinator of all the volunteers taking care of fact checking the biographies. They are looking great! I can't wait to get my hands on one of the decks!

WPI Wikipedia Editing Community
With over 13 billion visits per month, Wikipedia is one of the most visited websites on the internet. I think it's safe to say that, if we measure "contributions" by "number of views" (of course something absurd, but bare with me!), contributions to Wikipedia can have much more impact than any math article will ever have. Yet, Wikipedia is edited by our human society, with all of its biases, and these naturally get transferred to the website. Studies show that over 80% of the English Wikipedia editors are men, and only 17% of its biographies are about women, in what is commonly known as the Wikipedia gender gap.
In the last decade, many initiatives have sprouted to address this gender gap. One of these in which I contribute is the WPI Wikipedia Editing Community, that organizes monthly meetings to increase the representation of women and other underrepresented folks in Wikipedia. In October of 2021, we are Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Association for Women in Mathematics by editing, creating, and translating Wikipedia pages for women and folks from other marginalized groups in Mathematics. Register here to join us! This event is in cooperation with the Association for Women in Mathematics and supports its Welcoming Environment Statement. |
Notable Women in Math Playing Cards
To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Association for Women in Mathematics, the AWM is creating a deck of playing cards featuring 64 notable women mathematicians. To that end, a lot of volunteers (among which myself) have been reviewing a list of over 1300 candidates to choose which ones will be featured, based on their work in mathematical research, mathematics education, mathematics in BIG, establishing, cultivating and sustaining mathematical communities and increasing the participation of women and underrepresented groups.
I am also one of the biography writers for the project. Check it out!

Screenings of Secrets of the Surface
The movie Secrets of the Surface is a beautiful documentary about the life and work of Fields medallist Maryam Mirzakhani. In 2020, Zala Films partnered with the May 12th initiative to screen the documentary around the world, in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Excited about the partnership, I suggested to organize an online screening at my alma mater, the Polytechnic University of Catalonia. The idea was received with open arms by the school, and I am grateful to Anna de Mier, Eva Miranda, Marta Casanellas, Maria Alberich, and Mireia Rivera and the School of Mathematics for embracing this initiative. On May 12th 2020 I coorganized and moderated a debate after a public screening of the movie. It was my first online screening, with a 6-hour time zone difference!
Previous to the announcement of this partnership, I had been working with the WPI AWM Student Chapter and the George C. Gordon Library to organize a screening of the movie at WPI. Because of the pandemic, the screening got delayed, but it finally took place in the Fall of 2020. I am happy that, through this initiative, the library decided to purchase a copy with screening rights of the movie which is now available for future screenings. I have also screened this movie in my Bridge to Higher Mathematics class, in the summer of 2021, in an aim to showcase the diversity of mathematical lives to future mathematicians.
Of course, once I started working at Smith College, I also requested the Neilson Library to purchase a copy of the movie. We had a screening of it as one of the activities of the new AWM Student Chapter at Smith College (check us out, it's our Math Club!). We had the pleasure of having Dr Susanna Ferguson, from the department of Middle East Studies, to help us guide a discussion after the movie.
